Athens Epidaurus Festival
An eye-catching ode to Greek summer nights, filled with music, theatre, dance, and magic.
Designing the visual identity for Greece’s largest arts festival was both a creative challenge and an absolute joy. Welcoming around 200,000 visitors and 1500 artists, the Athens Epidaurus Festival 2022 required a daunting range of applications, including motion graphics, catalogues, programmes, press conference set-ups, super graphics, dozens of posters, and merchandise. Flexibility, driven by an ever-changing typographic system, was one of the defining aspects of the visual identity we developed.
Vibrant colours, rhythmic patterns, and dynamic typography set a distinctive tone that captures the diversity and creativity of the festival. The result of a fruitful collaboration with the internationally renowned artist Jannis Varelas, who created the collages and illustrations.
We maintained the Festival’s corporate typeface – Beausite by Fatype foundry – but introduced a stylistic set of the same font for the display typeface. Characterised by its idiosyncratic contrasts in thickness, this font injected character, dynamism, and rhythm into the identity. The handcrafted letterforms were adapted to all formats, an analogue response to each application.
Expressive typography and dazzling visuals blend to create a bright, inclusive, and optimistic world — an invitation that you can’t resist.
