15 Years in 5 Visualizations

For the 15th anniversary of our Studio Hahn+Zimmermann we have analysed and visualized different aspects of our daily work and how our studio evolved. The result is a series of visualizations on different media. For the 15 years party we presented the visualizations in a poster exhibition and on beer mats. For our clients we printed a series of postcards with the abstract data patterns as a giveaway. Furthermore the postcards could be scanned with the AR app Overly and explanations of the abstract data patterns can be seen as Augmented Reality. The animations that explain the visualizations are also presented on our website and give an insight in how the data coding works.

The five visualizations highlight various topics from the past few years: #1 competencies, #2 the development of our team, #3 lectures and presentations, #4 publications and #5 customers. The posters/postcards are deliberately kept abstract and do not include any captions or legends – these are collected in a separate legend booklet and available via the animations on the website or the AR app. It can be consulted while viewing the visualizations for explanation and decoding.

#1 Competencies: The visualization shows all the projects that we have realized in the last 15 years shown in order from top left (february 2008) to bottom right (december 2022). Each project is symbolized by a rectangle. The shape (triangle or rectangle) indicates whether a project was published in print, online, or both media. The position and colour of the areas characterizes the project by showing whether it was a publication or a corporate identity, and whether illustration, infographics or animation were part of the project.

#2 Team: In the past 15 years our team has grown constantly. We started in 2008 as a team of two - today there are seven of us. Most of the employees joined us with an internship and then stayed with us as permanent employees.

#3 Lectures: Over the past 15 years, we have been regularly invited to speak at conferences. Most of them were in Switzerland, but we were also invited to Germany and Austria several times – we even made it to Bergen in Norway. All talks and presentations are listed in order from top left (2008) to bottom right (2022). The colour shows in which country we were, the underlining marks online lectures during corona.

#4 Publications: Our work has been reported on 67 times in the last 15 years. Be it in magazines, reference books or even on the radio (Deutschlandradio Kultur). The contributions range from an article/interview in the magazine PAGE on the topic of information graphics (2010) to a 28-page article in a Chinese magazine (2012) or a film contribution realized by the Berne Design Foundation about our studio (2022). The size of the areas is proportional to the size of the contribution from 1/8 page up to 28 pages. The colour indicates whether the contribution was published in a book, a magazine, as part of a competition publication, on the radio/as a video or in a peer-reviewed journal.

#5 Customers: All projects are shown here as a line. The thickness of a line shows the project volume, the colouring gives an indication which area the customer comes from. The years are arranged in columns from left to right – the more employees worked for us within a year, the wider the corresponding year is displayed.
