Sammlung Herrmann – “Zustandsbericht” – “Status Report”
From 4 June to 16 July 2023 the Kunstraum Potsdam showed 120 works from the Berlin Herrmann Collection and the Contemporary Art Foundation Berlin curated by Linda Peitz. Manfred P. Herrmann and Burglind-Christin Schulze-Herrmann have brought together over 600 works of contemporary art focussing primarily on Berlin artists and those who have lived in Berlin for a time such as Nan Goldin and Michel Majerus. The seemingly bureaucratic title "Status Report" not only refers to Volkmann's quote it also takes a humorously sober look at the nature of a collection that had previously been little known to the public and was formed during this period. The exhibition focusses on a selection of works many of which had an aesthetic influence on the turn of the century and whose creative spirit continues to have an impact today. In this respect the posters and book titles show the "status report" neither as an evaluation instrument nor objective documentation but rather as a process of becoming and development. This meandering process is expressed in the booklet form and the use of soft flexible materials such as the translucent uncoated paper the change to glossy paper for exhibition views and the unreinforced linen cover. The expressive typography (Patron Medium) for the German/English accompanying texts and a consistent dramaturgical structure unite the passion of the collector couple with the exciting works in the collection.
