Hagrid Arabic Typeface

Designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini, Hagrid explores the expressive edge of grotesque letterforms, blending inverted contrast, calligraphic counterspaces, and brutalist shapes into a bold typographic voice. Originally conceived as a display family, it was expanded and refined in 2025 to improve readability and extend support to the Arabic script. Developed in close collaboration with Murad Alshawareb, Hagrid Arabic reinterprets a Naskh model through the quirky proportions and structural tension of the Latin design. The family includes Text styles for smoother reading and more radical Display styles with tighter metrics, stronger contrast, and sharper detailing. The dialogue between scripts is bidirectional: brutalist counterspaces and dynamic inktraps connect Arabic to the Latin forms, while dense, closed Arabic counters inspired a new Black style in the Latin. Supporting Farsi, Urdu and Arabic as well as Extended Latin, Cyrillic and Greek, Hagrid features positional numbers, discretionary ligatures, and a playful “Monsters” stylistic set. Ideal for editorial, branding, and expressive multilingual projects, it celebrates originality across writing systems.
