Dwelling

Dwelling is an exhibition project that redefines the residential interior as a dynamic and continuously transforming environment rather than a fixed design object. The project responds to the growing fragility of contemporary housing, where stable notions of home are increasingly replaced by temporary and adaptable living conditions. Instead of presenting an ideal interior, Dwelling focuses on the reality of everyday use and the gradual transformation of living spaces over time.
The project examines ordinary interior situations, daily routines, and small rituals as essential carriers of memory and identity. It is based on direct observation of how people intuitively modify and personalize their interiors, often beyond the intentions of the original design. Particular attention is given to the specific conditions of dwelling in Slovakia, where interiors frequently evolve through incremental and informal changes rather than complete redesign.
The installation consists of four modular spatial boxes representing fragments of a residential interior. Enlarged white negative reliefs form abstract spatial layouts derived from typical floor plans. These neutral forms represent the initial stage of design — a conceptual framework before the space becomes inhabited.
Projection mapping gradually introduces materials, objects, and everyday situations into the abstract spaces. Collages, archival photographs, and spatial drawings reveal traces of use and personal adaptation. A subtle sound environment based on housing-related statistical data connects individual experience with broader social conditions.
As the installation unfolds, visitors experience the transformation of the interior from a designed structure into a lived environment. The project highlights the tension between design intention and real life, showing how interiors inevitably change through time and human presence.
By presenting dwelling as a process rather than a finished object, Dwelling proposes an alternative understanding of interior design. It shifts attention from authorship to use and from formal perfection to lived experience, emphasizing the cultural importance of everyday interiors.
