Justa y Rvfina
«Justa y Rvfina» is a typographic project about an expression of the graphic heritage of Seville (Spain): the tiles used in the sign that names each street and square in the city. The project has investigated its origin, documented its variants and evolution and has finally designed three digital typefaces, seeking to return part of its cultural identity to citizens. These tiles began to appear in the city in 1845. Almost two centuries later, we can see a multitude of variants, deformations and somewhat risky uses on the streets. For this reason, instead of making a single typeface, we ended up designing two.
With «Justa» we have tried to express our version of the perfect canon originally used in 1845. Not having found the original molds, we have started from photographic and historical documentation to redraw the letters and complete the font with all the signs needed in a contemporary font, thus imagining a pure and immaculate model. On the other hand, «Rvfina» arises from the observation and photographic documentation made in the streets of Seville: we saw that in many signs letters with different sizes and finishes coexist, letters placed upside down, others distorted and difficult to read or even characters that replace others (V instead of U or A acting as U and vice versa). Lastly, we have added «Suprima», a collection of dingbats: illustrations, vignettes and graphics that add a visual layer to the dual and critical spirit of our project.
All this is available with a non commercial license for free download, and we invite you to make a donation to support the work of the NGO La Carpa, an association working for the rights and welfare of the homeless.
