Reisen 1992-1944 | Wilhelm Zwerenz

The protagonist of the journeys is Wilhelm Zwerenz - my grandfather. His wanderlust was awakened by his countless deployments in Europe during the second world war and he further continued his travels until the 1990s. All in all, he made 33 journeys, resulting in a material archive of over 290 colour photographs, 40 postcards and 18 detailed travelogues. This collection was sorted chronologically as well as digitized. Photographs were left unedited to not falsify or lose their historical authenticity. The deliberate arrangement of the years in the title indicates the focus of the book - a journey into the past. Additional points of interest are the historical facts and narratives juxtaposed with the travel photographs, which bring a rhythmic to the work. The tubular binded pages were printed on the outside as well as on the inside and deserve special mentioning. The back side of the photographs, which are at first glance hidden in the “pockets” illustrate the personal touch of Wilhelm Zwerenz, as he often added handwritten notes to them. The holistically minimalist design places the travel photographs in the centre and lets the viewer room to reflect.
