Open Organ
A waterfall with 4554 pipes
The organ in Stavanger konserthus (Stavanger Concert hall) is tailored to the acoustic of the concert hall. The instrument is a piece of art the combines French organ traditions with Nordic impulses. It is built by Ryde & Berg and the front is drawn by architect Ulf Oldæus. The world most reknown organist play on it regularly.
The poster is made for the organs tenth birthday concert. The celebration was called ÅPENT ORGEL (open organ) a play on open house which is a traditional Norwegian way of celebrating. The back of the poster shows the program for the day from morning to evening, from a tour inside the organ (four stories tall!), to yoga organ, to a dinner at the stage, and of course connects and the night ending with a party and much more.
The organ has an asymmetrical front that takes its inspiration from a local waterfall. The poster uses these shapes to make a graphic pattern that is easily recognisable and also directly connected to the concert hall. The resulting shape is so clear that it can be used in both positive and negative form and in various excerpts. It show the creativity and spontaneity you can expect during the ÅPENT ORGEL event. It functions both big and small. As a whole and as fragment. As static and in motion.
The poster was commissioned by contemporary composer and organist Nils Henrik Asheim, knighted in both Norway and France for his contribution to music. So this is our gift to him and his organ.
