Travel less without loss
In its climate strategy, EPFL has identified that travel accounts for 35% of its CO₂ emissions. The goal is to reduce these emissions by 30% by 2030.
Travel, primarily intercontinental, is the main source of CO₂ emissions for EPFL. However, visualizing tons of CO₂-eq remains abstract for many.
We have created an exhibition at the heart of the EPFL campus, using colored cubes to materialize the emissions.
- Green cube: 2 Tons. Maximum global CO2-eq emissions per person per year to comply with the Paris Agreement goals.
- Red cube: 14 Tons. Average CO2-eq emissions per person per year in Switzerland.
- Blue cubes: 10 and 5 Tons. Average CO2-eq emissions per passenger for a round trip Zurich-San Francisco, in business class and Economy class.
- Yellow cubes: 0.6 and 0.3 Tons. Average CO2-eq emissions per passenger for a round trip Geneva-Brussels, in business class and Economy class.
- Pink cube: 0.03 Tons. CO2-eq emissions per passenger for a round trip by train between Geneva and Brussels.
