Pieces
Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish icon of courage, saved tens of thousands of lives during WWII. Despite his heroism, most young Swedes remain unaware of his story. That most material about him and WWII often is stuck in historical romanticisation with grainy recordings and black & white images, haven't helped.
Our Mission:
We aimed to inspire the next generation to learn about Raoul and embrace civil courage by transforming Stockholm – Raoul's home, into an interactive learning space bridging past and present.
The Solution:
"Pieces," an AR app that blends an interactive city walk and museum in one, lets users walk in Raoul's footsteps, listen, interact, and reflect. By experiencing his story like never before, we spark the realisation that individual actions, like puzzle pieces, can create a powerful collective impact. The concept of different pieces working together also makes the foundation for the identity.
Creative Challenges:
Limited video/audio and only black & white photos demanded a fresh approach. To connect new audiences with Raoul, we:
Developed a dynamic logo that could help with the storytelling.
Restored and colorised images from his life for a more personal connection.
Made an parts based illustration style and used illustrative storytelling with animations to fill visual gaps.
Crafted a distinct soundscape narrated by Raoul's niece, Cecilia Åhlberg.
Used Augmented Reality technology to combine the digital and physical to find new and surprising ways for users to absorb information.
Created audio dramas to place the user in the shoes of eyewitnesses and with 3d sound create an immersive audio experience that places the user at the center of the action.
Respectful Innovation:
Creating an app that balanced respect for the subject with innovation was crucial. The result? A seamless experience where form, color, movement, AR, and sound immerse users in a multi-sensory journey through history. Because acting against injustice is as important then as now as always.
