The Best Dutch Book Designs Catalog 2023
Designing the catalogue for The Best Dutch Book Designs was both an honor and a challenge, knowing our audience included the top book designers in the Netherlands. Our goal was to create a functional yet inspiring catalogue—one that celebrated the 33 selected books while offering a fresh perspective on Dutch book design.
We approached the catalogue as a curated exhibition space, ensuring each winning book received individual attention and clarity. A key innovation was the implementation of a unique folding system, transforming each book into its own “mini-book.” This design encouraged focused appreciation, while a bilingual layout positioned Dutch texts on the right and English on the left of each foldout page. This ensured jury reports and technical details were always aligned with corresponding book images, enhancing usability and reader experience.
To foster an intimate connection between the viewer and the object, we focused on creating a tactile, personal interaction. Books are meant to be held closely, and we aimed to reflect this through thoughtful design choices and materials. The catalogue itself became a testament to the art of bookmaking, celebrating Dutch craftsmanship and the rich history of the graphic industry. Crafted by six different printers, each responsible for specific sections, the 33 books were grouped into six categories based on paper types supplied by Igepa Nederland. This approach transformed the catalogue into a tactile exploration, showcasing how paper choices enhance storytelling and elevate book design.
The hardcover design further embodied this celebration of detail. Covered in vibrant red Wibalin paper, it featured a precise strip of purple Wibalin at the midpoint, symbolizing color gradation. A delicate embossing added an elegant, refined finishing touch.
Studio Another Day expertly photographed the winning books, composing images that highlighted their unique features based on jury reports. By including hands holding the books, the photos added a sense of scale and emphasized their human connection—books are inherently about people.
Ultimately, the catalogue honors the exceptional quality of Dutch book design, inviting the viewer to experience the beauty, tactility, and craftsmanship that make each winning book extraordinary.
