The release of neue Serie57 is a typographic world premiere. It is the very first digital version of Akzidenz-Grotesk Series 57—a virtually unknown house cut of the world-renowned and beloved Akzidenz-Grotesk. Erik Spiekermann discovered this “unicorn” in his typographic workshop “Hacking Gutenberg” in a mislabeled case containing 16 point metal type. While the original Akzidenz-Grotesk is quite lively, the Akzidenz-Grotesk Serie 57 looks much more austere, tidier, and less nostalgic. Attributes that were sought after by designers such as Otl Aicher and Anton Stankowski. The former used the typeface for the visual identity of Braun and the latter for the visual identity of the city of Berlin.

Based on this single typeface Erik Spiekermann and Alexander Roth designed a complete type family: seven weights, corresponding italics, a character set of more than 1100 glyphs including lots of stylistic alternatives and OpenType finesses. neue Serie57 was born in the digital world, but with a pedigree that goes back to the 19th century. It is dedicated to Günter Gerhard Lange— Erik’s teacher and role model. neue Serie57 is exclusively available through www.neue.shop
