Functional Poster for Sonisk Music Film Festival

Sonisk Music Film Festival sought a poster that not only informs but also engages while reflecting the festival’s identity and cultural profile. The goal was to create a visually striking object that serves as both an information carrier and an experience in itself—a poster that, when unfolded, transforms into a festival program. The festival showcases films spanning various music genres, and the challenge was to develop a design that captures this diversity while maintaining coherence. The solution needed to be both experimental and functional, resonating with an audience passionate about both music and film culture.

The poster is designed as both a visual installation and a functional program. When unfolded, it transforms into a newspaper-style guide, offering a tactile and immersive experience that reinforces the festival’s experimental nature. This approach supports the idea that the festival is more than just a traditional film event—it is an experience where sound, visuals, and physical interaction merge. The color palette is limited to black and yellow, creating a bold, high-contrast graphic expression that aligns with the festival’s visual identity and ensures strong recognition. The typography and layout are structured around a grid derived from the festival’s logo, which itself is generated from sound. This adds conceptual depth, with design elements shaped by music, just as the festival’s program is. The raw, subcultural aesthetic draws inspiration from underground music and film movements, reinforcing the festival’s experimental and genre-crossing spirit.

This dual-purpose poster informs and engages through its dynamic transformation. On the wall, it serves as a striking visual representation of the festival; when unfolded, it becomes a functional program. The physical interaction enhances the festival’s hands-on, interdisciplinary approach, making for a more engaging user experience. The design is deeply rooted in the festival’s identity, with sound-generated elements creating a direct link between content and visual expression. By balancing experimental design with usability, the solution effectively communicates the festival’s essence while inviting the audience to interact with it.
