18 Years with Büro — Studio Timeline Site

https://18.burocratik.com

Eighteen years in the making, this is our studio’s (2006—2024) journey through design craft captured in a special Büro18 triple aniversary edition: a site, a book, and a 12” vinyl. This is a story of grit, curiosity, and creativity, told through the key moments, milestones, and voices that shaped Büro’s DNA.

After launching our new website last year, we felt the need to create a tribute to the studio’s resilience, focused on the people who built it. We started in Figma, collecting everything we thought mattered. It grew fast. Too fast. Development was postponed more than once, overwhelmed by its own scale.

When the project finally moved forward, it became clear there was too much content for a single timeline. Too much juice. So we split it in two. The website would focus on the Büro people timeline. The Büro18 book would gather everything else. Shaping it into something coherent was harder than expected, but we’re proud to finally release it, even if slightly later than planned.

The website, 18.burocratik.com, is a horizontal scroll experience. Clean and Swiss-inspired, it uses generous negative space and a WebGL timeline line as a core brand asset, carrying the narrative year after year. An imperfect line. No anti-aliasing. Jagged edges. A nod to the early web, when studios like ours began in 1995 and aliased shapes were simply part of the craft.

The experience opens with a spiral of years. Click it, and it unfolds into a sinusoidal line that segments the story as you scroll. That same line appears on the book’s cover and is UV printed on a clear 12-inch vinyl featuring the original music composed for the site.

Each year from 2004 to 2024 is divided into four chapters for quick access. A Dark Ages scroll reveals how it all started in December 1995, with a metal band website. Beyond chronology, the site uncovers the human side of Büro. New team members, landmark projects, sleepless nights, and international awards are told in the first person, with photographs and behind-the-scenes moments that rarely leave the studio or survive the hard drive crashes over the years.

At its core, the 18 Years with Büro — site is Büro in its purest form: bold, experimental, unapologetic. Audio and interaction are inseparable from the experience and cannot be turned off.

We know. UX rebels.
