OpenAI — DevDay 2025

For OpenAI DevDay, typography was not a layer applied to the system. It was the system.

The identity is built around square brackets, a fundamental programming character used to handle collections of information. We transformed this utilitarian mark into a structural framework that organizes, frames, and indexes every message across the conference experience. Headlines, timestamps, speaker names, and announcements are contained and sequenced through bracket logic, turning language into architecture.

At the center of the system is OpenAI Sans, our custom global type family. Designed for clarity across 500+ languages, OpenAI Sans balances technical precision with human warmth. Its neutral geometry and subtle character details allow it to function as both documentation and expression. At DevDay, it flexes from highly legible interface-style layouts to bold, large-scale typographic compositions on stage and in motion. The consistency of OpenAI Sans ensures cohesion across print, environmental graphics, livestream overlays, and digital surfaces.

We expanded this foundation with references to ASCII, a creative language born from constraint. ASCII represents ingenuity within limitation, building expressive worlds from minimal characters. That spirit informed our motion system, where OpenAI Sans assembles, fragments, and animates with rhythmic precision. Type behaves as if compiled in real time, reinforcing a developer-native aesthetic.

The palette draws from San Francisco RGB primaries against a dark-mode backdrop, amplifying hierarchy and maintaining broadcast clarity. Layouts are grid-based and indexed, echoing terminals and code editors. Brackets scale from subtle UI gestures to architectural forms, framing text without overpowering it.

Rather than relying on imagery as the primary driver, DevDay positions language and type as the hero. Through OpenAI Sans and a bracket-based structure, we demonstrate that expressive composition can emerge from clarity, constraint, and modular logic. The result is a cohesive applied typographic system that celebrates the craft of code and reinforces OpenAI’s platform philosophy: simple primitives, intelligently composed, can scale into powerful systems.
