TBI Praktijkfonds - Educating the Next Generation, Virtually
TBI Praktijkfonds, part of one of the Netherlands’ leading construction and infrastructure groups, faced a clear societal challenge: a growing national labour gap in the construction sector and a shortage of nearly 400,000 homes. Traditional school outreach and career days were not capturing students’ attention or inspiring curiosity about technical careers. TBI wanted to change how young people experience and imagine the world of building, safety, and innovation.
To meet this challenge, TBI partnered with The Brink Agency to create an immersive virtual reality experience that would turn abstract industry concepts into playful, hands‑on exploration. The goal was simple yet ambitious: make the invisible world of construction tangible, engaging, and relevant for young learners.
The Brink Agency designed and developed a fully interactive VR platform that places students directly on a realistic construction site. Players equip virtual safety gear, explore environments such as site cabins, tunnels, and dam walls, and complete tasks like sawing, hammering, and assembling components. This playful, task‑based system teaches essential safety protocols and introduces key construction processes in a way that is both memorable and motivating.
Rather than passive learning, the experience turns engagement into active discovery. In the first school visit with a mobile VR classroom, more than 300 students participated in a single day. Their excitement and curiosity provided immediate feedback and affirmed the value of immersive learning.
Within a few months the roadshow reached more than 50 schools and over 15,000 children nationwide, sparking conversations about technical careers that extend beyond the experience itself. The modular platform was built for scalability, ready to expand into new themes such as sustainability, smart mobility, and the broader energy transition.
The impact goes beyond numbers. Teachers reported unprecedented levels of student engagement. Many students left the experience thinking they could imagine themselves in roles they had never considered before. TBI now has a scalable tool for ongoing educational outreach and partnerships with local governments and vocational schools.
This project demonstrates how technology, creativity, and strategic storytelling can transform education. By meeting young people where they are and inviting them into worlds of possibility, The Brink Agency helped TBI reframe learning as a gateway to future opportunity, inspiring the builders of tomorrow.
