The Spectacle of Books

Across Europe, many manuscripts remain unpublished, often due to structural mechanisms of selection within the publishing industry. While libraries stand for openness and access, their collections largely reflect the filtering processes of commercial and institutional publishing systems. The Spectacle of Books, a world-first initiative by Bibliotheek Utrecht, confronts this contradiction by introducing an entirely new public library system: one that gives space to voices that would otherwise remain unknown.

Libraries actively facilitate reading, but rarely writing. For unknown authors, unpublished work often remains unseen and unread. The challenge was not to select the best unpublished books, but to design a system in which every unpublished, unknown book could find a reader.

What if a library became a platform for discovering the unknown without gatekeepers?
The Spectacle of Books is an unprecedented public podium exclusively for unpublished books. Anyone can submit their work to become part of a permanent, loanable library collection. No jury. No editorial selection. No hierarchy.

This is not a temporary exhibition, but a long-term installation embedded in Bibliotheek Utrecht for three to five years. Writers are continuously invited to submit new, unpublished books, allowing the collection to grow organically and remain alive, participatory, and relevant.

The Spectacle of Books functions as a designed discovery system, combining flexible space, enabling rules, inviting interaction, and playful narrative. Anyone can participate, both as reader and writer. Readers are guided intuitively toward unknown books, free from the influence of names, reviews, or marketing, while writing is actively stimulated alongside reading.

At the heart of the installation stands a three-dimensional flowchart column that guides visitors through playful prompts toward real discoveries. A flexible hanging system of black tubes and grids creates a dynamic, adaptable landscape. Bags can shift in position, allowing the installation to evolve over time. From the central column, colourful tubes branch into six thematic categories, inviting intuitive exploration.

Each book is wrapped in a specially designed bag: a physical invitation to take it and begin reading immediately. Subtle openings reveal glimpses of the book inside, while handwritten notes from writers to readers create an intimate entry into the story. After reading, readers can respond to the writer via a return card, completing the circle and adding a sense of intimacy and reciprocity.
