Varus 775

Varus 775 is a family-owned distillery based in Lübbecke,  Germany, near the Teutoburg Forest. Rooted in a landscape first documented in 775 AD, the brand draws from regional history, nature, and craftsmanship to create premium spirits with a distinct local identity.

The concept is inspired by the famous Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD, where the Roman general Varus was defeated — an event that halted Rome’s expansion and shaped Europe’s cultural divide between Latin and Germanic worlds.

History remembers the conflict. Yet beyond the battlefield, there was exchange. Romans and Germanic peoples traded goods, techniques, and tastes. During the Pax Romana, commerce allowed ingredients and ideas to move across regions. Varus 775 shifts the focus from conflict to connection — celebrating trade, craftsmanship, and the shared influences that helped shape local identity. This philosophy is embodied in the brand symbol: a coin depicting clasped hands and the caduceus — Mercury’s staff — representing commerce, negotiation, and peace. The coin celebrates exchange, reinforcing the idea that prosperity grows through connection.

To strengthen storytelling and brand differentiation, we introduced a refillable porcelain vessel. Inspired by Roman containers, the history of distillation, and the region’s ceramic craftsmanship, the form reinterprets tradition through a contemporary lens. Produced in limited batches and available in three distinct colors, the porcelain vessel elevates the offering from product to ritual object. It establishes a distinctive serving ceremony, reinforces cultural narrative, and positions the brand at the intersection of sustainability, craftsmanship, and modern heritage.

The brand identity balances past and present. The logo adopts the Roman inscriptional spelling VARVS. In classical Latin capitals, the letter ‘U’ did not exist — ‘V’ fulfilled both roles. This epigraphic reference anchors the brand in antiquity while maintaining a contemporary character. The typography pairs a rational sans serif with a modern serif, combining precision with warmth. Illustrations reinterpret the Teutoburg landscape, the distillery, and regional symbols, including the Lübbecke coat of arms framed by juniper and grain.

The spirits reflect this dialogue between regions. Local botanicals such as juniper from the Teutoburg Forest meet Italian citrus fruits — a nod to historic trade routes — resulting in products that combine regional authenticity with international resonance.
