Deutsche Börse Group - The Beautiful Order Book
The Beautiful Order Book – A 25th IPO Anniversary Publication for Deutsche Börse Group
25 years ago, Deutsche Börse Group made a bold move: it listed itself. That decision defined what followed – and launched a truly global enterprise.
To mark this milestone, Deutsche Börse Group asked LOOPING ONE to craft a premium coffee table book distilling its evolution from a traditional trading venue into a global technology and market infrastructure group. The ambition: to tell that story in a way that breaks free from financial communications conventions – elevated in craft, engaging to read.
LOOPING ONE joined forces with befriended design studio Bureau Johannes Erler. The result: "The Beautiful Order Book" – an anniversary publication that transcends the genre.
Conceived as a visual and narrative translation of a classic order book – the very heartbeat of any exchange – every element follows that inner logic. Three chapters – Call, Match, Open Orders – mirror the mechanics of an order book while tracing Deutsche Börse Group's arc of transformation. The book operates like the system it describes.
The tone is set from the first touch: embossed typography on the cover, a single, seemingly endless sentence unfolding the story of Deutsche Börse Group. A photographic overture introduces its seven business segments with warmth and a knowing wink: "Dream Maker," "Fact Maker," "Engineers of the Capital Markets."
At the heart of the book, prominent authors – among them Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel and KfW CEO Stefan B. Wintels – offer sharply different vantage points on Europe's financial landscape. A photo essay showcases works from the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, inviting readers to pause and reflect. Illustrator Joni Marriott reinterprets eight key terms from the original 2001 IPO campaign; her illustrations lend the book its rhythm and texture. In a move as unexpected as deliberate, Deutsche Börse Group hands the closing word to Gregor Gysi, Alterspräsident of the German Bundestag.
Typographically, the book embraces radical clarity: generous white space, serif-driven headlines, a precise grid system. The chapter markers – Call, Match, Open Orders – serve not just as structural signposts but as graphic guardrails guiding the reader.
The Beautiful Order Book is strategic communications, editorial craft, and creative ambition in a single binding. It makes complex subject matter accessible, demonstrating how modern communications can do more than document a brand's identity – they can actively shape it. With precision, with boldness, and a clear eye on the next chapter.
